What Should You Do If Your Basement Is Flooded?
1) Identify The Cause
The cause of basement flooding isn’t always apparent. An expert water damage restoration services team in Barnum Island, NY, can thoroughly check and detect your problem and endorse a solution.
Simple treatments, such as waterproofing, can often prevent recurring problems. Sometimes structural issues arise that necessitate foundation restoration.
2) Keep The Basement Dry & Clean
First, cut off all electricity and discard as many electric items as possible from the wet environment. You can use a sump pump to remove any remaining water.
Once the water extraction has been done, and the basement is dry, begin cleaning right away, or call a professional water mitigation company in Barnum Island, NY if the problem appears to be too large to handle it yourself.
If mold appears, it must be removed by a mold removal company like First Response Restoration and Cleaning Inc. in Nassau County to avoid allergies, asthma, and other health ailments.
3) Think About Basement Waterproofing
If your basement isn’t already waterproofed, now is the time to get it done! This will significantly reduce the likelihood of your basement flooding again.
Sealing the walls and floors to keep water out is a necessary step. Waterproofing can repair leaks and cracks in a basement’s foundation.
A qualified water restoration company in Nassau County like First Response Restoration and Cleaning Inc. can install sump pumps and drains to bring your home’s foundation to pre-loss condition.
Causes Of Basement Flooding In Barnum Island, NY
Most structures are built with a drainage system to remove water from the basement and foundation. It ensures to drain out any water that enters the basement before it causes a flood or mildew and mold.
It is critical to ensure that your property has a functional drainage system. During heavy rain, water can enter through cracks in other places. Furthermore, proper grading or downspout extensions reduce the possibility of flooding through endeavors.
1) Inadequate Drainage System
Your property’s drainage system is critical in preventing basement flooding. Basements will be the first areas where you will notice an ineffective drainage system that is clogged, improperly installed, or broken gutters.
A weeping tile is a draining pipe used to collect underground water. It is built around the building beneath the basement floor level to ensure water drains away and does not seep into your home. The weeping tile fails or degrades over time, especially if proper waterproofing is not installed.
2) Sump Pump Failure
A sump pump is groundwater draining equipment that keeps your basement dry and water-free. It collects and drains excess flooding water from the foundation or rainfall outside your home.
The sump pump is only operational when there is power. If it loses power during a storm, it will fail and shut down, allowing groundwater to flood the basement through the sump basin.
Regular sump pump inspection, cleaning, and testing will ensure proper operation and help you avoid basement flooding. It is necessary to protect your home or business office from flood damage.

Some information about Barnum Island, NY
Barnum Island is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 2,414 at the 2010 census. It occupies the eastern portion of an island situated between Long Island and Long Beach. That island, previously known in its entirety as Hog Island, consists entirely of the communities of Barnum Island, Island Park, and Harbor Island.
Previously called Hog Island, after the feral pigs introduced by early European explorers to the Native Americans, it was later renamed for Sarah Ann Baldwin Barnum. It was also sometimes called Jekyl Island, after the name of the development company that bought it from the county.
Between 1851 and 1870, Sarah Ann’s husband Peter owned large parcels of land on Long Island, though his primary business was a Manhattan clothier. Sarah Ann arranged the purchase of Hog Island for use as a ‘poor farm’ – a self-supporting almshouse, a social innovation for that period, and the island was renamed in her honor.
Local lore connects the island’s name to P.T. Barnum, the circus impresario, but this is incorrect, and likely due to confusion between ‘PT’ and ‘PC’ (Peter C.).
